The first, and only, allied jet aircraft to see action in World War Two – the British designed and built Meteor first flew in 1943 and entered RAF service in 1944. One of its first tasks was the intercept and shoot down flying bombs – the V1.
Powered by two Rolls Royce Derwent Turbojets, it had a top speed of 600mph (965km/h).
Meteors became the RAF’s principal fighters during the early days of the Cold War, but were later outclassed by the new generation of ‘swept wing fighters’.
