The Blackburn Buccaneer was designed as a nuclear capable strike aircraft for the Royal Navy.
Armed with the Red Beard nuclear bomb, it would be tasked with destroying Soviet ships in the event nuclear war broke out.
When the Royal Navy lost its conventional aircraft carriers due to defence cuts, the Fleet Air Arm Buccaneers were transferred to the Royal Air Force. Joined by newly built aircraft, the Buccaneers’ nuclear role was to be equipped with the WE177 nuclear bomb (on display here at YAM). Had the Cold War turned hot, they would be scrambled from RAF bases in West Germany, such as Laarbruch, to attack targets in Warsaw pact countries.
XV168 was donated to Yorkshire Air Museum by BAe and travelled from Brough to Elvington by road in 2013. She underwent a repaint in 2022 for our Cold War exhibition – Minutes to Midnight. She is painted in the colours of RAF Germany.
