This year's 999 Emergency Day is the third running of this great event and promises to be our biggest 999 Day yet. We will have more than 100 participants with us covering the entire spectrum of emergency services and rescue organisations, including our own in house fire and rescue team. The annual gathering to remember the sacrifice of the British and Free French aircrews that served at Elvington during World War Two, together with those that have served to deliver the freedom we enjoy today. The services take place from 11am at the French Air Force Memorial in Elvington Village followed by the Service of Remembrance at the Station Chapel of The Allied Air Forces Memorial, Yorkshire Air Museum at 13.30pm. On Christmas Eve 1944, 200 handcrafted toys were delivered to York Mansion House to be delivered to the sick and needy children in the City of York hospitals and institutions. This was the result of a chance flash of inspiration by a French Air Force Lieutenant, Sous Lieutenant Lemarchand, serving in the Mechanics Section with the French Squadron’s based at Elvington, who had seen the L.N.E.R (London & North Eastern Railway) charity Christmas tree whilst passing through York Station.
