The famous Hawker Hurricane was designed by Sir Sydney Camm and the prototype flew in 1935. It’s an icon of WW2 and in particular the Battle of Britain. Ours is a replica if the IIc Night Fighter version in the colours of BN292, flown by French pilot Yves Mahé who served with 253 Hyderabad Squadron, with RAF Fighter Command in Lincolnshire.
Mahé was defending York on the night of April 29 1942, when the Luftwaffe bombed the city, as part of the so-called ‘Baedeker’ raids targeting historic British sites in retaliation for the RAF hitting Lubeck and Rostock. York and other targets such as Bath were picked from a pre-war tourist book: ‘Baedeker’s Guide to Britain’.
Mahé shot down one of the approaching bombers using the Hurricane’s 20mm cannons and was honoured by the city for his actions.
He went on to serve on the eastern front and survived being a POW (despite being sentenced to death by the camp commandant) but was killed in 1962 when his Gloster Meteor Night Fighter crashed in France.
The repainting and remodelling of this aircraft was carried out in 2024 and included support from engineering tutors at York College who helped machine the dummy cannons.
