The Women’s section of the Royal British Legion will be holding a Memorial Day at the Yorkshire Air Museum on Sunday 28th July. Featuring a Parade by members of the Women’s Section Branches from across the region and beyond, the focus will be the Service in the Museum’s Women’s Memorial Garden, which was the nation’s first Dedicated Memorial to the Women of the Allied Services, which opened in 2004.
The event has been coordinated by YAM member and volunteer, Marie Taylor, who also happens to be Chairman of the North Yorkshire RBL Women’s Section. We are also delighted that the National Women’s Section, Chairman, Mrs. Wendy Bromwich, will also be attending and that the National Women’s Section Standard will be amongst those being Paraded. The Parade will be led by Skipton RBL Band, who will also perform during the day, prior to the Parade, along with some Air Training Corps Cadet Bands.
The Service will be led by YAM Honorary Chaplain, Revd. “Taff” Morgan, who is Vicar of Terrington, and a former RAF Tornado navigator.
The recently formed York Branch of the Military Wives Choir will also be performing in the main hangar in the afternoon.
We are especially pleased that the RAF are once again supporting us, with a flypast by a Hurricane and Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight being allocated to the event, subject to weather and serviceability.
The Museum will be taking the opportunity to make a day of it, by conducting engine runs of the WWI Se5a biplane, and the Douglas Dakota C47 military transport aircraft, recently brought into engine running condition:
Ian Reed, Museum director, said: “It will be wonderful to welcome over 200 members of the Royal British Legion to the Allied Air Forces Memorial, many of whom will be Parading, to gather around our Wonderful Women’s Memorial Garden to Remember those that served their country so well, in times of war and peace. With the flypast and other activities, another memorable and poignant day is in store.”
