The Great Exhibition of the North opens across Newcastle this weekend and we are very proud to be loaning the Museum’s Cayley Glider for the duration of the event. Sir George Cayley was a Yorkshire based engineer, inventor and aviator and is generally considered to be one of the leading people in the history of aeronautics.
The glider forms part of the £5 million exhibition and event. The aircraft is located in the newly re-opened Great North Hancock Museum and you will find it in the area Human Machine In Motion, an area that commemorates the North of England’s place in conquering physical and mechanical time and space.
Elsewhere in the building you will find Sheffield born British Astronaut Helen Sharman’s space suit and other great examples of the history of Northern based technology and historical landmarks.
You will be able to see the Cayley Glider throughout the summer and the Museum is really proud to be helping with such a diverse and large scale exhibition.
