The Yorkshire Air Museum is deeply saddened to announce the tragic and unexpected passing of George Astley M.B.E. from our Aircraft Engineering volunteers.
Georgewas particularly associated with the restoration of our Douglas C47 / DC3 Dakota, from G-AMY J from a canibalised wreck that arrived at the Museum in December 2000, to be recently returned to engine running condition, which has thrilled our visitors this season so far at some of our regular events.
A former RAF Engineering Warrant Officer, George possessed an imense amount of technical knoledge and experience of a variety of aircraft, so it is small wonder he was awarded the M.B.E. in recognition of his services to the RAF and, therefore, his country.
A big man, with a big voice, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him and is a great loss to YAM. George, Thank You for everything you have done for us.
