Those aviation Dads are probably dropping hints right now. “A Spitfire passenger ride…… Backseat with the Red Arrows….” The usual implausible stuff. But this Fathers Day, if you’re wondering what you buy the aviation minded Dad in your life, here are five ideas that will help you along. Four are available to buy online from the Museum and the other is a great gift to support a worthy cause. There’s something at most price points, so take a look at some gifts that are that little bit different this Fathers Day.
1. Ferry Pilots Notes – £25
The Ferry Pilots Notes publication is available exclusively from the Museum shop. It is an exact recreation of the small set of notes given to all Air Transport Auxiliary pilots in World War Two. Inside, you will find every single aircraft type they could be expected to be presented with and simple notes on the various settings and parameters for flight. It’s a remarkable publication that any enthusiast of aircraft will enjoy browsing through.
2. Halifax Sponsorship – £165
Our Halifax Sponsorship programme will give him a truly unique experience. The package includes a year long pass giving unlimited admission for one to the Air Museum, a commemorative gift pack with briefing notes on and a personalised certificate of sponsorship of our Handley Page Halifax. Plus the highlight of the Sponsorship, a one hour guided tour around both the outside and the interior of the Halifax.
A unique opportunity to explore the inside of this remarkable aircraft and experience first hand the interior of our Halifax, including the cockpit area, bomb aimers position, flight engineers and wireless operators positions.
3. 100th Anniversary Somme Pin – £40
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. This beautiful Somme pin is available directly from The British Legion website and is limited to a production run of 19,240. That is one pin for every soldier that fell on the first day of the battle.
We have no financial interest in this, but feel that it is a wonderfully atmospheric gift to give to any father with an interest in military history.
4. Lancaster model – £18.99
Available online or in person from the Museum gift shop, this Lancaster B1 Bomber model is an accurate model of the modified Lancaster bombers used late in World War Two to deliver the huge Grand Slam earthquake bomb. The Lancaster model depicts the type used to destroy the Tirpitz battle ship, flown by 617 Dambusters Squadron, making it different to other Lancaster models you may see.
A Family Day Out at the Museum – £26
This one is more than just a Fathers day gift. With a Family Pass for the museum, the whole family can have a great day out. You will receive a half A5 sized gold card together with Museum information. Valid for twelve months from the date of issue, it’s a great way to treat him to an aviation related day out. Make sure you remember that it’s his day out, though so be sure to buy him cake in the NAAFI!
All of these great gift ideas are thoughtful options and hopefully that little bit different to help you be prepared for Fathers Day this time around.
