It is that time of year again and you can almost hear the rumble of heavy engines as we head towards the 7th and 8th May when Battlegroup North takes place.
Once again, this multi themed event hosts the Yorkshire Military Vehicle Trust ‘Military Wheels and Wings Show’, and some 200 or more entries are expected to turn up from across the region and beyond to put on a truly impressive display of military vehicle history for our visitors to enjoy – the kids will love it! Imagine standing next to a tank!
There will be Jeeps, trucks, ambulances, artillery and tracked vehicles on display in what is the largest gathering of its kind in the North of England. A trophy will be awarded to the vehicle judges Best in Show, which will be presented to the owner on the Sunday afternoon.
Supplementing this will be some superb Living history displays, with some fresh diorama’s taking part this year, such as the Victory in Europe Re-enactment group and the Forces 80 group with their Falklands War era display of British Army kit and equipment, along with old favourites the Normandy Arnhem Society, Home Guard display and the German representation from the Frontline Association and Northern WW2 Association. Plus there will be impressive displays of civilian clothing to give a real 1940’s atmosphere to the weekend.
But the show’s historical roots lies in the superb wargaming show and what better venue could there be for these truly amazing scale model battle scenarios put on by Wargaming Clubs from across the region. There will be examples of the easier side of wargaming along with the prcision model dioramas and the kids will be able to get involved in the battles provided by the participation games and lean about this amazing and informative hobby.
There will be a wide variety of trade stands on offer selling everything from wargaming models to toys, games, books, paintings and period clothes and accessories meaning this is the place to be for the serious collector – bring your walletts!
There will also be a flypast by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight during the day on Saturday 7th May, the first of several appearances at Elvington during the forthcoming season.
So, a fantastic day out for everyone is in store and the best news is that it offers fantastic value for money as admission is at normal rates of just £7 Adults, £5 Senior Citizens and £4 Children, with the Family Ticket at just £18 for 2 Adults and up to 3 Children.
