Following the successful nomination of “Flightpaths” at last year’s IWM London Film Festival it has just been announced that “De lourds souvenirs” (Heavy Memories) by Genevieve Monneris and her son Thomas Lesgoirres has been chosen for the 2012 Festival. The film is about Genevieve’s father, Col. Andre Guedez (91), who was present at this year’s French in York festival when the first French memorial was inaugurated in York Minster on October 20th. Andre was one of just two survivors of his Halifax bomber of 347 Tunisie Squadron, based at RAF Elvington, during an urgent mission on Christmas Eve 1944, when the Allies had been taken by surprise by the sudden German attack, later known as the Battle of the Bulge. Instead of meeting his English girl-friend for Christmas celebrations in York on his night off, Andre and his crew found themselves in a desperate situation over the heavily defended Ruhr region of Germany. His plane was hit several times and he fell out of the plane unconscious, to find later that he was one of only two survivors and most of his crew mates had been shot. This gripping and emotional story is a reminder of the horrors of war and its consequences for everyone. The film will be screened at the Imperial War Museum Theatre in London at the following times and is to be voted upon by the audiences at the screenings, prior to the Award Ceremony on March 13th 2012.
