Sopwith Named Lecture 2015
The Allied Air Forces Memorial is honoured and delighted to be the official sponsor for the forthcoming Royal Aeronautical Society’s prestigious Sopwith Lecture, taking place on the evening of Thursday 25th June at the RAeS headquarters at Hamiliton Place, London.
The 2015 Sopwith lecture will be delivered by James Arbuthnot, former MP for East Hampshire and Chairman of the Defence Select Committee 2005 – 2014.
This RAeS Named Lecture was established in 1990 to honour Sir Thomas Sopwith CBE, Hon FRAeS. In the years prior to World War I, Sopwith became England’s premier aviator and established the first authoritative test pilot school in the world. He also founded England’s first major flight school. Between 1912 and 1920 Sopwith’s Company produced over 16,000 aircraft of 60 types.
To add to the spectacle of the evening, the Museum is transporting our superb reproduction of the Eastchurch Kitten experimental WWI interceptor to the event, which will be on display inside the building for the guests and lecture attendee’s to apprciate. This is something of a first for the RAeS, and should create quite a stir and talking point.
The Written Paper Prizes are awarded annually for the best papers published in The Aeronautical Journal by the Society during each previous calendar year. The 2014 Written Paper Prizes will be presented at the Sopwith Lecture on 25 June at the Society’s headquarters, 4 Hamilton Place, in London. The Written Paper Prizes form part of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Honours, Medals and Awards portfolio, whereby the Society recognises the achievements, innovation and excellence of both individuals and teams working across the breadth of the global aerospace and aviation industries.
The Written Paper Prizes consist of Gold, Silver and Bronze award certificates. They are not the subject of nominations but are conferred on behalf of the Council of the Society on the recommendations of the RAeS Medals and Awards Committee, assisted by the Editor-in-Chief of The Aeronautical Journal.
All RAeS Lectures are free to attend and we welcome both Members and Non Members. To RSVP, please click the Register button under Key Details and log in to your profile or create a user account. Alternatively, send your name and contact details to email@example.com to reserve your place.
