Join us to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Air Force Air Power. We are displaying an entire timeline of the Museum’s historic aircraft to show the amazing progression of aviation over just 100 years. The amazing collection of aircraft spans the entire history of flight, so join us in celebrating this historic year. See an entire century of aviation arranged in a timeline to depict the history of the RAF.
During the day, our guides will use our aircraft to showcase to young and old the major chronological aircraft development which have taken place during the 100 years of the RAF. After each presentation, we will have live engine run displays.
World War One Our AVRO 504, SE5a, Blackburn Monoplane and Eastchurch Kitten were the original pioneers of military aviation. Learn more about these early aviation legends with our guides at 11.00 am following which we will run the Kitten and SE5A engines.
World War Two Our Halifax bomber Friday the 13th is part of our WW2 aircraft collection we will be displaying to commemorate the sacrifice of the aircrews of World War Two. Meet our guide under the Halifax at 13.30 to hear inspirational stories about this aircraft. Afterwards, we will run the Dakota and Devon.
Early Jets and The Cold War Our collection of jets and Cold War aircraft shows the incredible advances made in aviation is such a short time span. A guided talk will take place in front of the Victor at 14.30 before our colourful Buccaneer Cold War Jet runs to show the amazing advances in just 100 years
SMJ Falconry Our friends at SMJ Falconry will be with us to show everyone the beauty of nature’s fighter pilots. A chance to enjoy the beauty of these wonderful birds closer than you would ever normally experience.
Live Engine Runs Visitors can enjoy live engine runs in the grounds of the Museum. Our Eastchurch Kitten will be running to celebrate one of the earliest aircraft, followed by our colourful Buccaneer Cold War Jet to show the amazing advances in just 100 years.
2018 is the Centenary of the Royal Air Force. Enjoy a great family day out as we celebrate 100 years of the RAF. Our collection of aircraft spans the entire history of British military aviation, come along and explore everything from pre war aircraft all the way to modern jets.
On the day, there will also be various exciting activities throughout the site:
Nimrod tours: places will be available on a ‘first come first served basis’ for 20 min tours of the Nimrod during the day. Please register on arrival with the Nimrod crew to book a spot (£5 fee per tour applies). Please note limited places will be available so register early in the day to avoid disappointment.
Dakota Paratrooper experience: Museum Guide David Coupland brings back to life momentous DDay events from inside the Dakota. Free to all visitors, 20 min sessions available throughout the day.
RAF Outreach team will present what it is like to be part of the RAF.
The Thirsk Yarn Bombers will decorate our site with their famous RAF100 knitting displays.
Plane building workshops: in our T2 hangar throughout the day with Mecodels.
In support of the Pocklington Memorial festival this September, we will be running a ‘Poppy’ making workshop in our Elvington Room. Please join and help make a few poppies to support a wonderful event.
And, there will also be some hands-on artefacts display by our Collections team, some wartime costume design by the Northern College of Costume, and evocative story display, plus our RAF100 children trail, and of course, our entire museum to visit including our Air Power zone with the Harrier simulator and open cockpits!
