Celebrating pioneering achievements of aviation and celebrating the 146th Anniversary of the birth of Orville Wright, our Pioneers of Aviation day will see some of our rarer and less celebrated aircraft taking centre stage, while the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be commemorating pioneers with a flypast by the Spitfire, Hurricane and Dakota.
Our Wright Flyer recreation is one of the very few in the world to have actually flown. While we aren’t planning a recreation of that famous flight, we will be bringing our Wright Flyer down from her suspended location on our main hangar down to ground level to allow visitors to see her closer than ever.
The famous 1853 Cayley Glider will also be on ground level display as we celebrate the great Yorkshire pioneer of aviation, Sir George Cayley.
Other pioneering aircraft will include our AVRO 504 that was transported all the way to Thiepval for the Somme Anniversary last summer, plus our SE5a fighter will be on hand, offering an insight into the bravery of early fighter pilots.
