Live Aircraft and Our Buccaneer Comes to Life
19th February 2017 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Our engineering team have been busy throughout the winter working hard on several of our live aircraft. As a special treat to Museum visitors, Sunday 19th February will see us running many of the Museum’s live aircraft fleet, including hopefully the long awaited return of our Buccaneer XN974 to live status.
Our Buccaneer Comes Back To Life
Our Buccaneer engines have been dormant for two years, but over the last six months our team have brought her to the point where it’s time to start up those engines once again. While her new Royal Navy paint scheme is not yet complete and she may well look a little unusual, this is a great chance to see and hear her come to life once again.
Bear in mind that this will be the first time she has attempted to start in quite some time, so while we have tested everything several times over, please bear with us if things don’t go quite according to plan. It’s also a chance to talk to our engineering team about their winter work and also get some unique pictures of our Buccaneer in a half painted condition!
We plan two sets of Buccaneer engine runs to complete some additional crew training and you can be sure we will all have our fingers crossed when the start button is pressed.
Victor and Nimrod Test Engine Runs
After the winter weather, it’s always great to see our Cold War jets come back to life. These engine tests are an important part of their conservation process and a vital preparation for the Summer Thunder Day events planned for the coming year.
Both our Nimrod team and Victor crews will be here to run the engines on these mighty Cold War Jets as

Sunday Lunch in Our NAAFI Restaurant
Our in house catering team will be preparing Sunday Lunch of Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, our gravy aroma will be competing with the exhaust fumes of our aircraft. Full size and child size portions are served, so be sure to beat our engineers to the front of the queue.
As you can see from the schedule, we are also running the big piston engines of our ever popular Dakota, Devon and World War One SE5A biplane. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to visit us this year or if you are itching to try out that new camera and get the whole family out of the house for a day our, then this Sunday will be a great day to visit. Our normal Museum entry fees apply, so use this page to find us and plan your visit.
