Your support is fundamental to help us maintain the heritage of our historical site, care for our precious Collections and keep the memories of war veterans very much alive.
The Allied Air Forces Memorial and The Yorkshire Air Museum is a registered Charity with no financial aid from local or national government. Since opening as an independent museum in 1985, we have always been self-supporting and have sustained solely through the generosity of people who value our work and thanks to our staff who are for the most part volunteers.
- We are the only Allied Air Forces Memorial in Europe, honouring the memories and achievements of thousands of allied airmen and women.
- We care for and conserve hundreds of thousands of artefacts and items relating to aircraft and people who flew them.
- We are a ‘history of aviation’ museum: we preserve over 60 historic aircraft and vehicles with exhibits retracing the main stages of aviation developments.
- We operate live aircraft including multi-engined heavy jet bombers and military strike aircraft.
- Your support helps us carry out this work.

Volunteering With Us
The Museum operates thanks to its dedicated employees and with the help of more than 130 volunteers who give their time and enthusiasm within 9 departments, from the Fire and Rescue Service to the Grounds Maintenance and Gardening teams, from the Aircraft Engineering to the Collections Departments. Without these volunteers, the Museum would not be able to provide such an enjoyable experience for its visitors.
Specific skills are not always necessary but the main thing we look for in our volunteers is a positive approach and an ability to communicate with a variety of people with different needs. In return, our volunteers enjoy a rewarding and varied experience with a wonderful team spirit and friendly atmosphere in a highly creative environment where “every day is different”. Volunteering for The Yorkshire Air Museum is a great opportunity to make new friends, to share common interests and at the same time help a worthwhile cause.
Time commitment ranges from half a day a week through to a considerable amount of time given by some of our volunteers.
We currently have volunteering opportunities for Exhibition guides. We are looking for people with an interest in military history and aviation, ‘story tellers’ able to engage with a wide variety of people from diverse background and with varied needs. The role requires a commitment of 1 day a week. You will be responsible for answering queries from visitors about the exhibits and showing them around our site. You will receive full training for the role.
We also have volunteering opportunities for Museum Stewards. We are looking for organised people, with good people skills, to welcome our visitors and process the admission payment and gift aid. The role also involves opening and closing the museum exhibitions at the beginning and at the end of the day and checking that exhibits are safe and that all display equipment is clean and in good working order. The role requires a commitment of 1 day a week, with the option of volunteering during weekends.
Please fill in the application form and return to our office or to email@example.com (please let us know which day you would be available).

We also welcome other applications and will do our best to find an appropriate opportunity as soon as possible. Please contact us using the contact form here if you have a query regarding volunteering for the Museum.
